HFC Growing Young Adventure

Many churches of all denominations are both shrinking and aging. Growing Young is based on research by the Fuller Youth Institute with over 250 of our nation’s congregations. Growing Young provides a toolkit a church can use to engage their imagination in involving and retaining young people. GY is not a program, rather it is a culture shift or a change in thinking. GY profiles innovative churches engaging 15-29 year olds that are growing – spiritually, emotionally, missionally and numerically. Packed with ideas, Growing Young guides ministry leaders in how to prepare their churches to reach younger generations in a way that breathes life into the whole church. Kaleo Academy wants to share this message of hope with HFC of how to be Growing Young while growing old.

BARCLAY COLLEGE

ADOPT A STUDENT PROGRAM

The college years are a crucial time in a young person’s life. Many are away from home for the first time and trying to figure out how to manage life on their own. We want to encourage students through our Adopt A Student program. This is the fourth year we are having this program at Barclay College. It is a way for the Haviland community and Haviland Friends Church to come along side Barclay students and encourage them in this phase of their life. A card, an email, a text, a phone call, a care package are all ways you could do this. If you are interested, please let Ryan Haase or Larry Lewis know after the service.

Stay Connected to our HFC College Students!

Nursery Helpers Needed

It’s that time of year again, we are updating our nursery helpers list. We have three rooms that we like to keep staffed to help out all of the young families who attend our church: the infant and one year olds nursery (across from the office), the two and three year old nursery (downstairs beside the lady’s bathroom) and the 4-5’s preschool children’s church. The more volunteers we have the less often each person will need to serve. Ideally we need twelve sets of helpers for each room, which would give us a three month rotation. Please talk to Traci or KC this week if you can help.

Everyone is invited this Sunday, August 18, at 6:00pm for a community wide school prayer walk.

If you are interested, please let Ryan Haase or Larry Lewis know in the church foyer after the service.

Stay Connected to our HFC College Students!

Going away to college can be a tough transition for kids. We want to stay connected to our college students through prayer, letters and care packages while they are away at college. If you have a college student or know of one for this list please send names and addresses to hfcoffice@havilandfriends.org.

New Leadership for Evangelical Friends Church-Mid America Yearly Meeting (EFC-MAYM)

On Saturday, April 13, 2019, the Yearly Meeting Elders gathered in Haviland for our spring board meeting. Following several weeks of thoughtful discussion and prayerful discernment, we agreed to extend a call to Dr. David Williams, our current general superintendent, and Dr. Thayne Thompson, our current Director of Missional Management, to serve together as co-leaders for EFC-MAYM on a one-year trial basis, beginning August 1, 2019. Based on their complementary gifts and skill sets, we have asked Dave to serve as part-time (3/4) Lead Superintendent and Thayne to serve as part-time (3/4) Executive Superintendent. Dave would assume primary responsibility for providing spiritual, formational and pastoral leadership for EFC-MAYM, and Thayne would assume primary responsibility for providing strategic, missional and organizational leadership for EFC-MAYM. The job descriptions for both positions have been modified and salaries adjusted in such a way that we anticipate minimal impact on our operational budget during the coming year. The Elders will be presenting this proposal for final approval by our yearly meeting representatives at our 2019 Ministry Conference in Haviland.
