Thoughts From The Youth Guy

As a young kid, sports were my life. My dad was a teacher and a coach, so most days my after school daycare was going to practice of some kind. In junior high and high school, every season of the year I played a sport. In college, I cut it down to one sport, but at that level it became a year-round commitment so it really wasn’t much different. As an adult, my time playing sports has lessened but my time watching and following sports has increased drastically. I have now seen my four favorite teams win a championship (Jayhawks ’08, Celtics ’08, Royals ’15, Chiefs ’20), which is pretty cool. This year, my Jayhawks were LOADED and looked poised to make a run at a national championship.

Then, in what seemed like an instant, it was gone. And not just college basketball, but ALL sports…gone, cancelled indefinitely. Bummer? Sure, for some. But, it’s likely that you don’t relate to me at all here, and your subject matter might be something else entirely.

My prayer at the beginning of all this is that maybe a slower pace and the chance to press “pause” would be a blessing and cause us to refocus and reset our lives on things that are most important. For me, no sports (along with many adjustments of greater significance) has resulted in more time spent with my wife and children and more time spent with God through the Word and prayer.

As our state and nation begin heading back in the direction of life as it was before, an increase in our busyness is inherent. My challenge will be asking “why?” Why do I do ______? What is the purpose? Is it necessary, or even helpful, for me to jump right back onto the merry-go-round of busyness that seems impossible to get off of once I’m on it?

God has been teaching me several things through this quarantine. Now, I just hope I can apply what I’ve learned.

Ponderings from Pastor Todd

“Living after the IF”

“If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me.” (Philippians 1:22, NIV)

A great percentage of us are going to come out of our homes someday soon… we are going to keep on living in this “earth suit”—are you ready?  Seriously, are you preparing to be fruitful in a world that will be looking for hope, peace and something in which to believe? Maybe from behind a mask, from six feet away, in a group of less than ten– God is preparing a fruitful labor for you.

With news and social media, we have been reminded our life here on earth is limited… “IF” will someday be a “WHEN.” We need to truly live on the way to that when.

Hospice tells us four things we need to say to a dying person: “Please forgive me,” “I forgive you,” “Thank you” and “I love you.” Candidly, these are the very same things dying people hope to get a chance to say to others who visit in the final days or weeks of their life.

Why wait? Labor fruitfully. Keep your apologies and forgiveness… up to date. Commit to deeply valuing relationship with others. Don’t hang onto unresolved arguments, don’t hold onto grudges and be careful not to withhold your gratitude. Love and be loved.

You survived the “IF.” Your “WHEN” isn’t here yet… Get busy living.

Understanding the beliefs of major Christian theologians and the significant historic events in the church’s 2000 years provides a strong foundation for a wholesome and proper perspective to consider our church life today. We are so wonderfully blessed that Josh Bunce, Professor of Church History and Christian Theology at Barclay College, will teach the next three classes on May 4, June 1, and July 6.

Thoughts From The Youth Guy

“He Will Hold Me Fast” by Ada Ruth Habershon and Matthew Merker. He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast. For my Savior loves me so, He will hold me fast.

For one object to be held fast (or to be fastened) to another object is a fairly easy concept to understand. Two separate items are held close and securely joined together. As a result, when one object moves, the other one moves. When one object stays, the other one does the same.

Here’s a question to ponder…in what do I have more confidence? My ability to hold fast to Jesus or His ability to hold fast to me?

If we were to rely on ourselves alone, we’d inevitably fail at some point. We’d let go and fall away. In John 6:37, Jesus reminds us, “All that the Father gives to me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”

He will never reject us, He will never let us go, He will hold us fast. Jesus fastening Himself to us is what ultimately holds us close and creates a secure, permanent bond. What an encouraging reminder to us during such strange and often discouraging times!

(By the way, look up that song. It’s incredible.)

Ponderings from Pastor Todd: Death has been defeated. The tomb is empty.

“For death has crept in through our windows & has entered our mansions.” (Ecclesiastes 7:4, NLT) Have you somehow missed that death is part of our journey this past month? I have looked at plenty of charts, percentages & predictions…

Death and taxes… well, not taxes, April 15 was not tax day this year, but it was predicted as the high of the deaths for COVID-19 (2600 were predicted to die in the USA). Breaking news– “death has crept in through our windows & has entered our mansions.” Not really that new of news… roughly 60 million people will die this year of all causes worldwide… & next year… & about the same a year after that.

Taxes we can put off until July 15. Death is coming for us all. That is why last Sunday’s question is so crucial: “Do you believe this?” In Revelation 1:18 Jesus told us, “I hold the keys of death & the grave…”

Death whenever & however it creeps into your mansion has been defeated. The tomb is empty.

• Pray for our health care workers who are on the front lines.

• Pray for those who are in a battle for their life today

• Pray for safety for all of us

• Pray for those who are grieving loss.

• Pray that God will send a sweeping, healing wind around our globe.

Think of it. At 11:00 EST people will pray on the east coast. At 11:00 CST we will all be praying in the center of the country. At 11:00 MST the people in the Rocky Mountain region will be praying. At 11:00 PST the BC family on the west coast will be praying. Later, our BC family in Alaska will pray. There will be a wave of prayer from the BC family for God’s intervention. What an incredible moment in time this is for us to collectively seek God’s face together.

So join me, will you? Let’s pray for a sweeping intervention from God’s hand and mercy into our world. Let people say, “Something unexplainable happened the end of March 2020 during the COVID-19 outbreak.” Of course we will know exactly what that something is…. God! “Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work.” Oswald Chambers

Dear HFC Volunteers, Thank you for your service at HFC. We greatly appreciate all of you!
Until further notice, HFC will not be offering nursery, children’s church, ushers, fellowship time or having Sunday School classes on Sundays. No need for any volunteers to come.
Please join us online for worship at 10:30am at https://www.youtube.com/user/HavilandFriends

During this difficult time we want to make sure you are all well and have what you need to stay that way. If you are in need of assistance, or know of someone in need, we are here to help with things like shopping for groceries, running errands or picking up a meal. Contact Traci at the church office or Kaye Hardinger. If you are available to help run errands for those in need, please contact Traci in the church office. Thank you! Outreach Committee

No Wednesday night activities on April 1.

The brunch for Easter Sunday has been postponed.

We made a new Facebook group page called “HFC Connection” for our church to stay in touch. Purpose of this group: This is a space where our church family can share prayer requests, praises, announcements and encouragement. This group is private. Anything that is posted in this group cannot be seen by people who are not members. We will still email out announcements and important information in case you are not on Facebook.

It’s almost time for our Easter Offering! This year HFC is focusing on Sinaloa and EFM. Please label “Easter Offering” on checks.

From Royce Fraizer: What if Barclay College family called out to God in a single voice? With that in mind I am calling on all of us to set 11:00 each morning as a Moment of Prayer for healing for our world. Set your alarm on your phone and when is vibrates at 11:00 each day, pray for healing in our world. Invite your family, invite your friends, invite your children to join us.

• Pray for the researchers who are working to find a treatment and cure.

• Pray for our health care workers who are on the front lines.

• Pray for those who are in a battle for their life today

• Pray for safety for all of us

• Pray for those who are grieving loss.
