More often than not Friends missionaries have landed among people who live in poverty. This has certainly been true in Africa. Over these many years missionaries have felt compelled to start schools, orphanages, hospitals, micro-businesses, and churches to minister to the whole person. The constant challenge has been how to help people in such a way that they actually emerge from poverty and become fully alive to God, to one another, to themselves, and to the places the Creator has made for them. In other words, how can they flourish for the glory of God in all the relationships that are part of life? Money, programs, and institutions in themselves are not the answer.

During the last fifteen years or so Rwanda has been a training ground for EFM missionaries and African Friends leaders in what can be called “Whole-Life Discipleship.” The Navigators have been our teachers and coaches in a method called, “Discipling for Development.” We often shorten the name to “D for D.” This approach to making disciples of Jesus Christ has been gathering momentum and is now spreading to Burundi and the Congo. We see God the Father using it to conform people into the image of His Son and to also carry out the Great Commission in Rwanda and beyond.

NEW EXHIBIT TO OPEN IN MAY

The Haviland Heritage Foundation would like to honor our Haviland area veterans and our nurses (not necessarily military) in our early summer exhibits. If you have any pictures, memorabilia, or clothing that you would like to donate or loan to the Foundation Museum for a few months, please contact Lori Binford (620-388-0995) or Sheri Elliott (862-7200).

Beginning the first Saturday of May, the Museum will be open from 9:00am – 4:00pm each Saturday of the summer. We would appreciate your help as a volunteer to be a host or hostess for a few hours on a summer day. Contact Jeanne Sneed (862-5448) to get your preferred spot on the schedule.

She directed last year’s highly successful production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and brings years of experience in the theatrical world.  The creative team also includes vocal direction by Jared Ross, choreography by Traci Ballard, and technical direction by Casey Roberts.  Lighting Design will once again be by Marki Sulzbach (Atlanta, GA), a Barclay graduate who has worked professionally around the nation including Universal Studios, Orlando, and Sight and Sound Theatres in both Strasberg, Pennsylvania, and Branson, Missouri. Set design is by Shane Shetley who also has extensive professional theatrical experience.

The cast includes both Barclay students and local community members. They will bring the familiar fantasy story to life, with authentic costumes, beautiful music, dazzling lighting, and a bit of theatrical magic.
